But what many people struggle with when they decide to try CBD is proper dosage—there is no universal standard, and different people and different symptoms require amounts that vary drastically!

Preliminary Elements To Understand

How much CBD you should take for pain depends on a lot of elements. It’s essential you understand a few basics before diving in.

1. Your CBD product should always be lab-tested.

Because CBD is largely unregulated by the FDA, manufacturers can get away with labeling a product as having CBD when it contains little or poor-quality CBD. If you purchase a cheap product, you could end up with something that has zero efficacy, or worse, contains harmful ingredients.

The only way you can ensure the quality and effectiveness of CBD is through verified lab reports. These reports detail every chemical component of the cannabinoids and other substances in your product.

2. Not all pain is created equal.

There are many scientific and medical terms to differentiate types of pain. Scientists often group pain into three different categories: neuropathic pain, caused by nerve damage or inflammation, acute pain, caused by damage to the bones or tissues, and centralized pain, which occurs in the brain when the nervous system is damaged.

Different types of pain respond to different treatments. For example, CBD might work for arthritis (acute pain) but not fibromyalgia (centralized pain). If your CBD dose for pain is ineffective, it may be because your pain is coming from a source that CBD does not target. Like all supplements or medications, everyone reacts to it differently, and you will only know if you try.

3. CBD absorption time varies by administration method.

The time it takes for CBD to take effect depends on how long it takes for it to enter the bloodstream. The fastest method is inhalation, like vaping, where the effect can be almost instantaneous. Topicals and oil application under the tongue are almost as fast. The slowest method is oral consumption, i.e. edibles, which may not take effect for hours.

Make sure you’re prepared to wait if you’re taking edibles, and don’t be tempted to take an additional dose if you think it’s not working. Wait a day before trying a higher dose. (Anyone who’s had a THC edible may have learned this lesson the hard way!)

4. You may build up a reverse tolerance over time.

Say you’ve been using CBD for several months to manage pain, and you start feeling like you need less and less. If so, your body may have built up a reverse tolerance to CBD. This means your brain has become accustomed to the effects of CBD and needs less of it to achieve homeostasis.

The opposite of this is tolerance, meaning your body needs more CBD to be effective. Some researchers say this can’t happen with CBD, but if you suspect it’s happening, take a break to reevaluate your symptoms. You may have heard of a “tolerance break” for THC—CBD is the same. Rather than increasing how much CBD you’re taking for pain, you should reset your system by waiting several days and starting again with a low dose.

Microdosing Method

This method involves administering the minimum possible CBD dose for pain that will have an effect, examining (and journaling!) the effect it has on your body, and increasing it bit by bit. This way, you’ll be able to analyze the exact effect each dose has on your body and work your way up to the dose that’s right for you.

For the most accurate microdosing data, make sure you’re accompanying the dosages with a regular, consistent diet in order to keep the external factors as constant as possible.

The minimum dosage of CBD that many scientists recommend is about 1mg per 10 pounds of body weight. So if you’re a 150-pound person, start with approximately 15mg. For microdosing, you might want to work in even smaller increments.
